Bodicote (222 all out) beat Radway (217 all out) by 5 runs

Good bowling performances from Millard (4-52) and Walsh (3-38) - about time Walsh! - could only keep Bodicote to 222.  Another fine innings from Douthwaite Jnr (105) was not enough to see Radway home, eventually falling agonisingly short by 5 runs.

Bodicote close the gap on Radway in the league, by Radway cling on to 5th for another week.

Radway (165 for 4) beat Wooton (163 all out) by 6 wickets

An excellent bowling performance by the returning Matt Hayden (7-42) and a superb batting display by Douthwaite Jnr (113 no) saw Radway dominate Wootton at home and consolidate 5th position.

Radway (182 for 9) beat Fenny Compton (179 all out) by 1 wicket

Linked by reciprocal aminosity and joined in public memory precisely because of the sporting encounters which have come before; going toe to toe like Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier, the two village cricket teams so paired by their rivalry that when one is mentioned, the other immediately springs to mind...... it was THE local derby... RADWAY vs FENNY COMPTON!

Radway won the toss and elected to field.  Douthwaite Jnr (3-24) soon dismissed Fenny's opening batsman with a well planned long hop, much to the sniggering slip cordon's delight.  Des Smith (81) batted extremely well to help the visitors post a total of 179, which could have been bigger had it not been for the sublime bowling of Hibberd (4-33) who had the lower order in disarray with his unique "medium mervs" - he will soon be growing a moustache to fulfill his true potential as a rotund, yet leathal strike bowler.  Watch out Matt Walsh.

After the early dismal - N.B correction "dismissal" - of Douthwaite Jnr and Hibberd (26), the Radway middle order disintegrated quicker than the scrumptious cake served at tea.  With Fenny well and truly on top and Radway heading for the inevitable loss, Hibberd departed early and that was that.... or was it?  His phone beeps...... "We won by a wicket!", it reads. He takes a moment to think...."nah, it's a wind up"...

As it happened, a wind up it was not.  Douthwaite Snr (57no) and Cherry (47) mixed glorious stroke play with gritty determination to make a beautiful cocktail of run chase success... Now serving at the Avon by the glass or pitcher.  A fantastic victory and points to push one place higher in the league table to 5th.

Byfield (205 for 4) beat Radway (204 for 6) by 6 wickets

The Radway skipper won the toss and elected to bat... yes, you read that correctly.  In conditions typical of the sub continent, The Skipper kept his troops in the shade as Hibberd (42) and Douthwaite Jnr laid the foundations for a healthy total. Rutherford (44 no) and Douthwaite Snr (31) pushed the score to 204, having to throw caution to the wind after Boycott Barnes had scored 18 runs in as many overs.... too soon to be thinking of averages surely?!

Unfortunately the Radway total was surpassed in the final overs of the game aided by a superb innings by Paul Adkins (91).

9/10 May 2009

Radway 1st XI lose their second fixture of the season to Bodicote.  Phil  Douthwaite was left pondering the colour of the first duck of the season (suggestions to admin@radwaycc.co.uk) as Radway slowly accumulated a total of 172 in 45 overs.   Although restricted in some parts of their innings (Craig Walker 3-42) loose bowling and "polytetrafluoroethylene hands" contributed to Bodicote's successful run chase and eventual winning margin of 4 wickets.

Radway 'A' also lost the second fixture of the season away to Thornborough 'A'.  After removing the home side for a respectable 175, Radway 'A' fell short of the total finishing on 147 all out.  Credit must be given to George Elsby who provided a Man of the Match display, contributing 3-32 with the ball and a solid 73 with the bat.

7 May 2009

Six of Radway's finest* took to the tees and greens of Rye Hill Golf Club on a warm but windy afternoon for the annual RCC Golf Day.  After a quick discussion on the order of play and the working out of handicaps by Matt " The cheat  Accountant" Walsh; two elite teams of three confidently ploughed their way down the first fairway..... via the line of trees on the left...and right...

Points of Interest:- Craig "Bandito" Walker has swapped his Cowboy hat for a Sombrero during the off season.  His game has improved markedly and he is showing further signs of his preference for a "slower pace" of life.  Mark "Front Nine" Barnes started confidently and eased around the early part of the course.  However, the "Hair Trigger" that has plagued his personal life now seems to be affecting his swing stamina (no pun intended).  More to follow....

2/3 May 2009

"Radway's 2009 opening gambit was one that fits with the club ethos - we gave it a bl**dy (edited) good go, everyone did their best and we could have pulled off a shock upset had things gone our way - but we didn't."

However, Radway 'A' and the Sunday XI both win their first fixtures of the season.
